Spain and Italy played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in their opening match of Euro 2024 in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday.

The 2008 and 2012 champions Spain took the lead through a Jordi Alba strike in the 25th minute, but Italy equalised just before half-time through Ciro Immobile.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the second half, but neither could find a winning goal.

The draw leaves both teams with one point after the first round of matches in Group A.

Also in Group A, Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by Portugal in Munich.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning free-kick to give Portugal the lead in the 35th minute, but Germany equalised through Leon Goretzka in the 67th minute.

The draw leaves Portugal top of Group A after the first round of matches, with Germany in second place.

In Group B, France and England played out a 1-1 draw in London.

Aurelien Tchouameni gave France the lead in the 17th minute, but England equalised through Harry Kane in the 54th minute.

The draw leaves both teams with one point after the first round of matches in Group B.
